2011 La NUCÍA (Alicante)

municipal SPORTS CENTRE EXTENSION

Due to the high demand for sports facilities in La Nucía, the existing covered pavilion became too small to house most of the associations of a municipality that was a Best European Sports Town candidate. The extension of the Sports Centre and Indoor Pool was to be dedicated to the different Martial Arts Clubs, including Taekwondo, Kick Boxing, Aikido, Karate, Hapkido and Muay Thai, among others.

Because the extension’s surface was no larger than 10% of the complex, we chose to work following a “complete the whole” concept, using the existing materials. In this way, the plan was to create a multipurpose area that could be divided into two or three separate rooms. A dynamic volume was thus created, with an adaptable height. Its outer appearance, designed with translucent, low emissivity polycarbonate panels, varies depending on the time slots and different usages.

Directly inspired by the Novelda Youth Centre, a single backlit skin blankets the different sections, organising them and creating a façade hierarchy, until reaching the terrace overlooking the gyms. Here, users can engage in outdoor sports contemplating views of the Serreta landscape and La Nucía’s future Olympic Stadium.
